International Chardonnay Day

Today is the 3rd annual celebration of the Chardonnay Grape. And why wouldn’t we celebrate this grape? The grape itself contributes much to the fact that Chardonnay is the world’s favorite white wine and America’s number one selling white varietal.

The reason why Chardonnay is so popular is because it is grown all around the world. The grape is suited for a wide variety of climates and soils. Chardonnay’s intrinsic blank canvas allows its flavors to be influenced by differences in soil, climate, and vineyard practices. This allows winemakers to put their own style into the wine.

Chardonnay may best be known for being ‘oaked,’ which means the oak influences the flavors. Chardonnays that are aged in oak are known to have aromas of vanilla, smoke, and caramel. While Chardonnays that unoaked or ‘naked’ have a lighter, fruitier flavor. Chardonnay is also produced using malolactic fermentation which imparts a buttery flavor.

Chardonnays are full bodied with flavors of citrus and melon. Chardonnay wines have low to medium acidity and beautiful golden hue. Chardonnay grapes doesn’t only produce Chardonnay wines, but other wines like Champagne, White Burgundy and Chablis can be made entirely form this grape or blended as the main component.

Don’t forget that all you have to do to join in on the party is to get some Chardonnay, drink, and talk about it. You can’t join in the conversation by using the hashtag #Chardday. Happy tweeting and drinking!

The Perfect Picnic Table for Winos

Want a better way to keep your wine chilled at your next outdoor party? Then it is time to get busy revamping your old picnic table into this ingenious version.  This picnic table, designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, features a built-in galvanized steel gutter down the center of the table.  Fill it with ice and now you have the perfect cooler for your wine at your next backyard barbecue.

DIY Tips:

  • Measure the width and length of the table plank that you plan to take out.  Get a gutter of the same approximate width and length.
  • Remove the plank with a hammer and hammer claw.  Make sure to pry out all of the nails.
  • Insert the gutter and drill a screw into the gutter and side of the adjacent planks.  To make it even more sturdy add metal brackets that attach to both table and gutter.

If you aren’t a DIY’er, you can buy this fabulous table starting around $160.  Enjoy your BBQ while sipping back on perfectly chilled wine.

Cinco de Mayo Y el Derby de Kentucky

That’s right, this Saturday is a double whammy! There are two great reasons to celebrate, it’s Cinco de Mayo AND the Kentucky derby.  And maybe you’re not sure if you should make margaritas or mint juleps.  Well why not try a twist to both classics. Step out of the box and enjoy these great cocktail recipes we are about to share with you.

Do you plan on flaunting a big hat, betting on a horse and celebrating the quick but exciting Kentucky Derby race?  If this is the case then you definitely need to try this version of the Mint Julep.  We bet that you’ll be yelling, ‘I’ll Have Another,’ whether you bet on this horse or not.

Champagne Julep

  • 4 oz Champagne
  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey
  • 1 tsp superfine sugar
  • 6 mint leaves

Combine 4 mint leaves with the sugar and a few drops of water, and muddle well. Add the bourbon, and stir well. Strain into a collins glass, add ice cubes and the champagne. Garnish with 2 mint leaves, and serve.

Or do you plan on celebrating Mexican Independence Day?  Well friends, too bad you’ll have to wait till September but you can celebrate the Mexican victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862.  Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture.  And by that, I mean tequila! It is Mexico’s holy water after all.

Miracle Margarita

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 2 oz  Fresh squeezed orange juice (Yes, I used Minute Maid)
  • 1 oz Grand Marnier
  • 1 oz Champagne
  • 1 lemon wedge
  • 1 lime wedge
  • An orange and sugar rim to garnish, if you so please.

First squeeze lemon and lime wedges into a mixing glass full of ice.  Then Add Tequila, orange juice and Grand Marnier.  Shake and then strain into a margarita glass rimmed with sugar.  Next, float 1 oz of champagne atop and garnish with an orange.  Last but not least, celebrate the Miracle of the 5,000 Mexicans taking down the French soldiers.

Enjoy celebrating!  And don’t forget to share with us your favorite recipes you’ll be pouring this Saturday.
