Fat Tuesday – Let’s Indulge!

King-Cake-1

This year, Mardi Gras comes just two days before Valentine’s day.  It will be a week full of binging on sweet treats and wine.  If the  pressure-packed “day of love” is just not for you then why not celebrate Fat Tuesday like you live in The Big Easy.  Indulge in the traditions of Mardi Gras with a big, fat piece of Kings Cake!

What is Kings Cake?

Kings Cake is made of cinnamon roll dough topped with icing and sugar in the typical Mardi Gras colors of gold, purple, and green.  Some are stuffed with cinnamon, praline, strawberry or cream cheese.  But the signature of the cake is a plastic trinket, usually a baby Jesus, placed inside the cake.  The one who gets the piece with the trinket is King or Queen of the day and gets to host the Mardi Gras party the following year.  Click here for a recipe.

Want to indulge a bit more?  Enjoy the kings cake with a glass of riesling or sparkling wine!

Wings and Wine with a side of Football

Orange-Glazed-Chicken-Wings-Paired-with-Batasiolo-Gavi-Wine-PairingWhat will an estimated 110 million Americans be doing this Sunday beside watching the Super Bowl? They will be consuming a s***load of wings! According to the National Chicken Council’s 2013 Wing Report, we will devour 1.23 million wings as the Harbaugh brothers fight for the Vince Lombardi trophy.

Have you decided what wines you will serve with your Super Bowl wing feast yet? No worries, we have a few suggestions for that absurd amount of wings you plan to put down.

Fried Chicken Wings with No Sauce: For these naked wings that have a crisp coating, pop open some Champagne. The bubbles will counter act the grease and the yeast flavor from the wine matches the breading of the chicken.

BBQ Wings: If you decide to go with the some sweet BBQ then you will need to pour a glass of red Zinfandel. The Zinfandel should have a just enough sweet fruit to hold up to the sweet sauce.

Thai Chicken Wings: These are pretty spicy wings so stay clear from a red wine. A dry Gewürztraminer would be a good match with its spicy, floral characteristics and clean finish.

Hot Buffalo Wings: Put out that fire breath with a Riesling. Its cool, tart flavors will stand up to those Blazin’ wings.

A Thoughtful Hostess Gift

In search of a thoughtful hostess gift? Give the gift of wine. Yes, many of you think of wine as a default, or last minute gift; however, just because it is convenient doesn’t mean it is any less thoughtful.

So how do you go about picking out the “right” wines? With dozens of grape varietals and prices that that range from two dollars to a couple hundred, it can seem daunting. Before you start your search, narrow down your options to help pick the perfect bottle.

1) Celebrate the gathering. Bring your favorite celebratory wine and explain this to hostess to put her at ease.

2) Bring a bottle that has significance. Is your hostess environmentally friendly? Bring an organic wine. Is the host Italian American? Bring an Italian wine like Chianti.

3) Be original! Purchase a lesser known wine. Discovering a new wine is exciting and makes a great conversation piece. Also, no one will know how much you spent on the bottle.

4) Pick up a dessert wine. Everyone always brings a wine to go with the main course so the hostess will appreciate the change. A bottle of Port or a Riesling will go great with the sweet treats!

Whatever bottle you decide to choose, hand the bottle to host so he doesn’t wonder if it is suppose to be opened that evening or not. If you didn’t intend for him to open it, mention you brought this for him to enjoy at a later date.

Be sure to check out MyWineDeal for your fabulously thoughtful hostess gift.

Drink. Discover. Donate.

November is Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month and MyWineDeal.com is donating $1 from each sale to help fund Alzheimer’s research and support programs.

For the founder of MyWineDeal, Joe Pellar, the fight to find a cure to Alzheimer’s is personal.  He lost his grandmother to the disease.  “It’s a cause close to my heart.  I hope that this will help get us one step closer to finding a cure,” said Pellar.

Studies show that a natural compound found in red wine may help combat the disease.  Resvertrol, found in the skin of red grapes, is believed to protect the body and brain from aging.  Aging being the greatest risk factor in Alzheimer’s.

Along with the $1 donation from each sale, you can make an additional donation on the site.  You should stock up on wine at MyWineDeal.com for the upcoming holiday season.  ‘Wine’ not?  It is for a great cause.

R.Merlo Estate Vineyards

MyWineDeal is pumped to have two R.Merlo Wines to offer you this week.  These two wines are perfect for fall sipping.  Just – Click. Ship. Sip.

Below Ray Merlo answered a few questions about his wines and The Merlo Family Estate Vineyard.

Where are you located?

The Merlo Family Estate Vineyards are located on the riverbanks of the wild and scenic South Fork of the Trinity River at the southern tip of Trinity County located in the North Coast region of Northern California. Surrounded by 6,000 ft intercoastal mountains on all sides, these isolated vineyards are higher than most California vineyards at an elevation of 1,250 feet. Over 45 acres are currently planted with a variety of grape types using quality clone on terroir and site-specific rootstocks. Our vineyards include blocks of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Merlot, as well as, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon from nearby blocks.

Do you have a tasting room?

Being that the vineyards are so remote, we have opened a tasting room just south of Sacramento in Clarksburg, CA. The tasting room is located at The Old Sugar Mill, which is just a 15 minute drive from downtown Sacramento. Here one is able to sample all of our old world, varietal style wines.

Do you come from a winemaking family? And how would you describe your wine making style?

Our family’s grape growing and winemaking goes back many generations beginning in Northern Italy and you will see that heritage reflected in our wine making style. Our wines are all 100% varietal, which means our wine making truly begins in the vineyard. Our wine making style is very old world and is based on the concept that quality wine is grown in the vineyard, a minimalist approach is taken in the cellar, allowing the wines to clearly reflect the varietal character and distinct terroir of Hyampom Valley. Merlo Family Estate Vineyards produces a rare collection of richly flavored and expressive wines. Unlike many California wines, these deep, complex wines are not high in alcohol, nor overripe in flavors. Rather, the wines are naturally big and bold, yet refined and beautiful.

Has your wine won any awards?

Our wines have won many awards which you can find on our website at http://www.rmerlo.com.

How would you describe you wine with MWD Customers?

The 2005 Syrah is a big and richly dark wine has a refined balance and an elegant nature. Fully ripe blueberries, black cherries, and dried currants are the forward flavors supported by characters of Italian roasted espresso, stoutly porters, and Mediterranean spices.  A favorite dish we like to serve with this wine is Texas spice rubbed and grilled Porter-House steak, Potato Gnocchi pasta and tossed Mediterranean peasant salad and a dessert of fig and raspberry cobbler a la French vanilla mode.

The 2009 Chardonnay displays well-balanced fruit and intense aromas of orange blossoms, fresh apples, and vanilla beans that are complimented by flavors of baked Gravenstein apple cobbler and lemon custard cream. Pair this wine with Caribbean coconut duck curry, vegetable kabobs, and crunchy basil/garlic bread and a dessert of Tortuga Pineapple/Rum Cake and enjoy!
