That’s right, this Saturday is a double whammy! There are two great reasons to celebrate, it’s Cinco de Mayo AND the Kentucky derby. And maybe you’re not sure if you should make margaritas or mint juleps. Well why not try a twist to both classics. Step out of the box and enjoy these great cocktail recipes we are about to share with you.
Do you plan on flaunting a big hat, betting on a horse and celebrating the quick but exciting Kentucky Derby race? If this is the case then you definitely need to try this version of the Mint Julep. We bet that you’ll be yelling, ‘I’ll Have Another,’ whether you bet on this horse or not.
- 4 oz Champagne
- 2 oz bourbon whiskey
- 1 tsp superfine sugar
- 6 mint leaves
Combine 4 mint leaves with the sugar and a few drops of water, and muddle well. Add the bourbon, and stir well. Strain into a collins glass, add ice cubes and the champagne. Garnish with 2 mint leaves, and serve.
Or do you plan on celebrating Mexican Independence Day? Well friends, too bad you’ll have to wait till September but you can celebrate the Mexican victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture. And by that, I mean tequila! It is Mexico’s holy water after all.
- 2 oz Tequila
- 2 oz Fresh squeezed orange juice (Yes, I used Minute Maid)
- 1 oz Grand Marnier
- 1 oz Champagne
- 1 lemon wedge
- 1 lime wedge
- An orange and sugar rim to garnish, if you so please.
First squeeze lemon and lime wedges into a mixing glass full of ice. Then Add Tequila, orange juice and Grand Marnier. Shake and then strain into a margarita glass rimmed with sugar. Next, float 1 oz of champagne atop and garnish with an orange. Last but not least, celebrate the Miracle of the 5,000 Mexicans taking down the French soldiers.
Enjoy celebrating! And don’t forget to share with us your favorite recipes you’ll be pouring this Saturday.
