Canihan Family Wines

Wowie, what an offer we have lined up for our MyWineDeal.com customers this week.  These wines are the ones you dream about, and i’d snatch them up fast because this awesome deal certainly won’t last long.

Below hear what Bill Canihan from Canihan Family Cellars has to say about these two award-winning wines.

Where are you located, do you have a tasting room?

We are located near downtown Sonoma. Our vineyard is located on the border of three appellations: Sonoma Coast, Los Carneros, and Sonoma Valley. This cool climate results in elegant wines, particularly Pinot Noir and Syrah.

Our winery facility is located on Eighth Street East, just two miles from the vineyard.

While we do not have a tasting room, we invite guests to visit the vineyard or winery on Saturdays, by appointment only. Visitors enjoy our vineyard walks where I can explain our extreme vineyard management, and organic & biodynamic practices while tasting our Pinot Noir & Syrah where they are grown.

What drew you to winemaking?

I was drawn to wine making both from my Swiss grandfather, August Siegrist and from my college roommate, Jack Galante.

As a child, to help his family, my grandfather worked on a hillside Pinot Noir vineyard in St. Gallen (near Zurich). He came to New York, then San Francisco as a teenager with a dream to start his own winery, but Prohibition dashed his plans.

August’s son-in-law (my father, Bill) purchased 20 acres in Sonoma in 1973, just as the Winery Rush began. The property had been sustainably farmed for a century by a Basque family who obtained title for the property via a Spanish Land Grant.

Wine was always served with dinner, although back then the quality of the wine served with dinner was not close to today’s quality, and before I turned 18, my glass was half water & half wine.

In college, my fraternity brother and roommate, Jack Galante had an amazing collection of wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Northern California. We tasted many bottles from his collection, and we attended wine auctions at Butterfield & Butterfield to build our cellars. When we graduated, Jack immediately planted Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon on his parent’s Carmel Valley ranch. I thought that my family should do the same with our Sonoma ranch. Our neighbors had planted Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, so 15 years later, in 1998 we decided to plant Pinot Noir, Syrah and a small block of Cabernet Franc.

How long have you been making wine?

I made a small amount of wine in my garage for a few years prior to our first commercial vintage of 2004. The 2004 vintage consisted of only 100 cases of Pinot Noir and 225 cases of Syrah. I decided to enter these two wines in the largest wine competition in the country, the San Francisco International Wine Competition. With 47 judges blind tasting 4,300 wines, I was thrilled to learn that our Pinot Noir won a Silver Medal and that our Syrah won the Sweepstakes Award: Best in Show Red Wine.

We sold-out immediately, and I changed our Syrah label to “Exuberance”.

Where do you source your grapes?

All of our grapes are from our own vineyards, which are dry-farmed, certified organic, and hand-tended to yield the highest possible quality. We’ve never sold nor purchased any grapes. It takes exceptional fruit to make exceptional wines. I don’t know of any other grower that farms as meticulously and hand-sorts every grape cluster twice prior to crush.

How would you describe your winemaking style?

While we focus on growing and harvesting the best grapes possible, we want the weather and character of each vintage to be reflected in our wines. Each vintage is unique, and you can taste the uniqueness in each vintage of our delicious, compelling wines. Rather than age our wines for less than a year in oak barrels, we age our wines for almost two years in 100% French oak barrels. We feel that this extra year of barrel ageing enhances the wines, and because a young wine will transition through several phases, we allow the wines to age an additional year in bottle prior to release.

What varietals are you currently growing and making?

Pinot Noir comprises approximately half of our production, with cool-climate Syrah, and a tiny amount of Viognier comprising the balance. The Viognier consists of an acre and a half that was formerly our Cabernet Franc vineyard and was budded-over in 2007.

Hopefully, we will produce our first Viognier this fall.

Has your wine won any awards?

We enter our wines in the two largest wine competitions (San Francisco International & San Francisco Chronicle) and we’re proud that every wine we’re ever produced has won a medal in both of these competitions. Our Pinot Noirs have won Gold medals in three out of the last four years, and our Syrah typically wins Gold or Double Gold. Our 2005 Exuberance Syrah won Double Gold in the SF Chronicle Competition, while our 2005 Exuberance Pinot Noir won Gold in both competitions.

What has inspired you most?

The praise and accolades that our wines consistently receive.

Winning “Best in Show Red Wine” in the prestigious San Francisco International Wine Competition has inspired me to follow my philosophy of meticulous wine growing.

How did you arrive at the name “Exuberance” for your Syrah label?

Exuberance describes our emotions upon learning that our inaugural vintage, the 2004 Syrah was judged by 47 sophisticated judges to be the best red wine from more than 4,300 wines at the San Francisco International Wine Competition.

Additionally, a decade ago, Alan Greenspan often used the term “irrational exuberance” to describe consumer behavior, increased credit card spending, rising stocks and real estate prices. Our farming techniques are financially irrational, as we dry-farm which results in yields of 1-2 tons per acre as compared with 3-5 tons per acre for irrigated vineyards, and our organic & biodynamic practices result in farming costs twice that of conventionally farmed vineyards. Our wines are both elegant and exuberant, so I decided to label our Syrah, along with our occasional vintage of reserve Pinot Noir as “Exuberance”.

What is the one thing about this wine that you want to share with MWD customers?

As a wine consumer, long before we planted our vineyard, I felt that cool-climate Syrah was under-appreciated and my personal favorite of all varietals. Therefore, we decided to commit almost half of our vineyard to producing cool-climate Syrah.

We’re proud of the exceptional results, including a Double Gold Medal in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition for this 2005 vintage.

MyWineDeal convinced me to let them purchase a few cases remaining in my library, which I intended to keep for myself.

If you could describe your wine in one word, what would it be?

A Thoughtful Hostess Gift

In search of a thoughtful hostess gift? Give the gift of wine. Yes, many of you think of wine as a default, or last minute gift; however, just because it is convenient doesn’t mean it is any less thoughtful.

So how do you go about picking out the “right” wines? With dozens of grape varietals and prices that that range from two dollars to a couple hundred, it can seem daunting. Before you start your search, narrow down your options to help pick the perfect bottle.

1) Celebrate the gathering. Bring your favorite celebratory wine and explain this to hostess to put her at ease.

2) Bring a bottle that has significance. Is your hostess environmentally friendly? Bring an organic wine. Is the host Italian American? Bring an Italian wine like Chianti.

3) Be original! Purchase a lesser known wine. Discovering a new wine is exciting and makes a great conversation piece. Also, no one will know how much you spent on the bottle.

4) Pick up a dessert wine. Everyone always brings a wine to go with the main course so the hostess will appreciate the change. A bottle of Port or a Riesling will go great with the sweet treats!

Whatever bottle you decide to choose, hand the bottle to host so he doesn’t wonder if it is suppose to be opened that evening or not. If you didn’t intend for him to open it, mention you brought this for him to enjoy at a later date.

Be sure to check out MyWineDeal for your fabulously thoughtful hostess gift.

Drink. Discover. Donate.

November is Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month and MyWineDeal.com is donating $1 from each sale to help fund Alzheimer’s research and support programs.

For the founder of MyWineDeal, Joe Pellar, the fight to find a cure to Alzheimer’s is personal.  He lost his grandmother to the disease.  “It’s a cause close to my heart.  I hope that this will help get us one step closer to finding a cure,” said Pellar.

Studies show that a natural compound found in red wine may help combat the disease.  Resvertrol, found in the skin of red grapes, is believed to protect the body and brain from aging.  Aging being the greatest risk factor in Alzheimer’s.

Along with the $1 donation from each sale, you can make an additional donation on the site.  You should stock up on wine at MyWineDeal.com for the upcoming holiday season.  ‘Wine’ not?  It is for a great cause.

R.Merlo Estate Vineyards

MyWineDeal is pumped to have two R.Merlo Wines to offer you this week.  These two wines are perfect for fall sipping.  Just – Click. Ship. Sip.

Below Ray Merlo answered a few questions about his wines and The Merlo Family Estate Vineyard.

Where are you located?

The Merlo Family Estate Vineyards are located on the riverbanks of the wild and scenic South Fork of the Trinity River at the southern tip of Trinity County located in the North Coast region of Northern California. Surrounded by 6,000 ft intercoastal mountains on all sides, these isolated vineyards are higher than most California vineyards at an elevation of 1,250 feet. Over 45 acres are currently planted with a variety of grape types using quality clone on terroir and site-specific rootstocks. Our vineyards include blocks of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Merlot, as well as, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon from nearby blocks.

Do you have a tasting room?

Being that the vineyards are so remote, we have opened a tasting room just south of Sacramento in Clarksburg, CA. The tasting room is located at The Old Sugar Mill, which is just a 15 minute drive from downtown Sacramento. Here one is able to sample all of our old world, varietal style wines.

Do you come from a winemaking family? And how would you describe your wine making style?

Our family’s grape growing and winemaking goes back many generations beginning in Northern Italy and you will see that heritage reflected in our wine making style. Our wines are all 100% varietal, which means our wine making truly begins in the vineyard. Our wine making style is very old world and is based on the concept that quality wine is grown in the vineyard, a minimalist approach is taken in the cellar, allowing the wines to clearly reflect the varietal character and distinct terroir of Hyampom Valley. Merlo Family Estate Vineyards produces a rare collection of richly flavored and expressive wines. Unlike many California wines, these deep, complex wines are not high in alcohol, nor overripe in flavors. Rather, the wines are naturally big and bold, yet refined and beautiful.

Has your wine won any awards?

Our wines have won many awards which you can find on our website at http://www.rmerlo.com.

How would you describe you wine with MWD Customers?

The 2005 Syrah is a big and richly dark wine has a refined balance and an elegant nature. Fully ripe blueberries, black cherries, and dried currants are the forward flavors supported by characters of Italian roasted espresso, stoutly porters, and Mediterranean spices.  A favorite dish we like to serve with this wine is Texas spice rubbed and grilled Porter-House steak, Potato Gnocchi pasta and tossed Mediterranean peasant salad and a dessert of fig and raspberry cobbler a la French vanilla mode.

The 2009 Chardonnay displays well-balanced fruit and intense aromas of orange blossoms, fresh apples, and vanilla beans that are complimented by flavors of baked Gravenstein apple cobbler and lemon custard cream. Pair this wine with Caribbean coconut duck curry, vegetable kabobs, and crunchy basil/garlic bread and a dessert of Tortuga Pineapple/Rum Cake and enjoy!

Chateau Moyau

MyWineDeal.com is bring you this spectacular French red this week. With only 500 cases produced of this 88point wine (Wine Spectator), we aren’t sure how long this deal will last. Pick it up and enjoy a lovely red from Southern France.

Where are you located, do you have a tasting room?
We are located in southern France in the Languedoc. Our vineyards are located on a Mediterranean estuary near the town of Fleury. We have a small tasting room as well as guest rooms which we rent

Do you come from a winemaking family? If not, what drew you to winemaking?
In a former life I was an accountant in the UK. I moved to France with my wife many years ago and produced wines at my own property, Domaine des Chandelles, before taking over Chateau Moyau. Claude Gros is the consulting winemaker. He is a native of the region based in Narbonne and works almost exclusively with the domaines in the Languedoc-Roussillon.

How long have you been making wine?
Over twenty years.

Where do you source your grapes?
We source from our 100 acres of vineyards. Most vineyards are located directly on the Mediterranean estuary in La Clape. This is one of a small number appellations in the Languedoc designated as “Cru’s” or “growths”.

How would describe your winemaking style?
I look for a modern winemaking style. Here in the Languedoc achieving optimal ripeness is not difficult so we work on getting healthy grapes and restricting yields.

What varietals are you currently growing and making?
We grow Mourvedre, Syrah, Grenache Noir and Grenache Blanc, Carginan, Cinsault and Bourboulenc. One-third of the vines are over fifty years old and produce exceptionally concentrated fruit.

Has your wine won any awards?
We have won acclaim in the US, German and French press. The vintage was rated 90 points by Wine Enthusiast

What is one thing about this wine you want to share with MWD customers?
Terre de Pierres is a ‘garrigue’ wine. The ‘garrigue’ is the wild heathland that surrounds Moyau. The vineyards that make Terre de Pierres are surrounded by wild rosemary bushes, thyme, almond trees and so many wonderful flowers. It is a blend of 4 grapes: Carignan, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. The wine spends 12 months in French oak barrels. It has a deep red colour and the nose is a heady blend of blackcurrants and raspberries with hints of licorice and caramel. In tasting you get mellow black fruits, followed by silky tannins and a slightly spicy finish.

If you could describe your wine in one sentence, what would it be?
Complex with aromas of cassis, blackberry and licorice, ripe silky tannins give excellent structure to ripe black fruit, raspberry and cherry flavors.

ElkHorn Peak Cellars

MyWineDeal.com is excited to bring you two great wines from ElkHorn Peak Cellars. This little gem of a winery in the Jamieson Canyon is in the ideal spot for growing Pinot Noir at an award winning level. The Chardonnay does not disappoint either. This is proven as we learn from ElkHorn Peak that it is PERFECT with any meal. Both of them are discounted at a great price, so check them out HERE!

ElkHorn Peak Cellars

Where are you located? Is there a tasting room?
We are located in the extreme Southern end of the Napa Valley in an area called Jamieson Canyon. This is one of the few areas in the Napa Valley for growing Pinot Noir grapes. This location is substantially cooler that the rest of the Napa Valley. We have a very cool tasting room located in the loft of barn. The view of the Napa Valley and the San Pablo Bay are breathtaking. Our address is 200 Polson Rd, Napa, Ca. Tasting’s are by appointment only.

Do you come from a winemaking family? If not, what drew you to winemaking?
Heavens no! I purchased this vacant ranch in 1983. It was deserted and was formally a 900 acre sheep ranch. We decided that since we were now in Napa, we should grow grapes. I had no idea of what a grape vine was. I quickly learned! One thing that I really learned was that growing grapes was alot of work! The best thing that I enjoy about growing grapes in the Napa Valley is the lifestyle. Alot of hard work, not alot of money, but a fantastic lifestyle. Not to mention plenty of great wine to drink!

How long have you been making wine?
Our first commercial vintage was in 1992. We had made some homemade wine in 1987, the first year we produced grapes. It was pretty impressive. We continued to sell our grapes to some of the finest wineries in the Napa Valley until 1992 when we started making wine commercially.

Where do you source your grapes?
Our Pinot Noir is all Estate grown at our 10 acre vineyard located in Jamieson Canyon. I have been farming the grapes on this site for nearly 30 years. I grown seven different clones of Pinot Noir. After growing grapes on this site for an extended period of time, I know how I need to grow the grapes to get the flavors that I am looking for. We do source the Chardonnay grapes from a small ranch in the Carneros Region.

How would you describe your wine making style?
We strive to have a consistent style of Pinot Noir. It is a fruit forward style with the correct acid balance and silky mouth feel. Most well made Pinots will hold for about 5 to 8 years, however our Pinots consistently hold up for around 10 years… considering that they are cellared properly.

What varietals are you currently growing and making?
We grow only Pinot Noir. We specialize in Pinot because of the location that we grow in. The micro-climate, closeness to the San Francisco and San Pablo Bay and the South facing hillside are our strong points. The soil that we grow in, the Fagan Series soil, is only found in this part of the Valley. This combination of factors, or terrior, is what gives our Pinot that unmistakable flavor and tastes that we are know for. We also make a Pinot Noir Rose from our Pinot grapes. This is a very crisp, fruit forward wine that is best served chilled.

Has your wine won any awards?
Over the years we have won many awards from various different events and wine competitions. Our current release Pinot Noir, the 2007 recently won a DOUBLE GOLD at the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. It also has received several 90 point plus rating at various wine competitions.

What inspires you to grow grapes and make this fantastic wine?
Can’t really say that anything inspired me to grow grapes and make wine. It is just something that I found myself doing. As I got into it, I became more interested and strived to learn more and more. Growing grapes is a very satisfying thing to do. It is alot of hard work but the results are clearly worth it. I think the best thing about growing grapes and making wine is the lifestyle. I live in a beautiful place and do my thing….

What is one thing about this wine that you want to share with MWD customers?
If there is one thing that I could share it would be to enjoy wine! Wine is a very cool beverage, compliments food and is a neat social beverage. But it has to be enjoyed.
Put it in its place. It is not the most important thing in the world ( some wine snobs think it is) but it is to be enjoyed and it is to have fun with. Enjoy it with your meal, with good friends and reflect on the different types and styles. Experiment with different wines. You will never know what you are missing unless you try it!

If you could describe your wine in one sentence, what would it be?
The PERFECT wine for most all foods.
