Domaine Combe Blanche

MyWineDeal is offering the 2004 and 2009 Domaine Combe Blanche ‘La Chandeliere’.  A great way to experience how the aging process and vintage can play a factor in wine.   These wines are only produced in the best years of limited quantities, and we are lucky enough to offer these two great vintages, which you will love.

Where are you located, do you have a tasting room?

We are located in the town of La Liviniere located at the base of the Montagne Noir about 30 miles inland from the Mediterranean. We have a small tasting room to receive visitors by appointment.

Do you come from a winemaking family? If not, what drew you to winemaking?

I’m originally from Belgium where I worked as a school teacher. I moved to the Languedoc about thirty years ago drawn by the beauty of the region and my desire to create a new life as a vigneron.

How long have you been making wine?

I’ve been a vineyard owner since 1981 but started making my own wines about 12 years ago.

Where do you source your grapes?

All of my vineyards are at an elevation of about 300-500 feet in the Montagne Noir. Here they benefit from cool nighttime temperatures which slows the ripening process.

How would describe your winemaking style?

Most of my work is done in the vineyards. The most import part is deciding on a harvest date. We want to make sure that are wines are balanced and not too ripe. We use oak barrels to age wines but limit the amount of new oak.

What varietals are you currently growing and making?

For white wine grapes we grow Viognier and Roussanne. We also Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Pinot noir. I was also one of the first to plant Tempranillo in the Languedoc.

Has your wine won any awards?

Jancis Robinson the British journalist was rated our 2009 La Chandeliere as her favorite wine in a blind tasting of Languedoc wines. We also received excellent reviews from Wine Enthusiast, La Review du Vin de France and Decanter.

What is one thing about this wine you want to share with MWD customers?

It’s our “grand vin” made in limited quantities and only in the best vintages that’s both powerfull and nuanced.

If you could describe your wine in one sentence, what would it be?

It’s a rich and full bodied wine with a complex aromas of blackberry, cherry, cedar and pepper.

Croze and Smith Wooton Wines

MyWineDeal.com has two fantastic boutique wines to offer you this week.  Less than 800 cases of both the Croze Sauvignon Blanc and Smith Wooton Syrah were produced.  Below Gary Wooton answered some questions about his wine.  Learn more and then pick up a bottle to try!

Where are you located? Do you have a tasting room?

Yountville, CA, but unfortunately we do not have a tasting room.

Do you come from a winemaking family? If not, what drew you to winemaking?

Nope, I am the first with any interest in alcohol of any kind.  I love the intersection of art and science, and find that it is endlessly changing and rewarding.

How long have you been making wine?

First vintage as a home winemaker in 1982 and my first time as a commercial winemaker was in 1995.

Where do you source your grapes?

From whoever the best grapes of a particular variety are around.  From Napa, Calaveras County, Lake County.

How would you describe your wine making style?

Heavily influenced by Old World, insistence on balance and elegance. These are similar to the wines produced in Napa in the 1960s & 1970s.

What varietals are you currently growing and making?

Cabernet Rosé, Cabernet Regular, Cabernet Reserve, Cabernet Port, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petite Verdot, Chardonnay, & Sauvignon Blanc.

Has your wine won any awards?

Yes, but we produce such a small amount that we have found that by the time that the awards were announced the wine is gone so we have stopped entering competitions.

What has inspired you most?

The endless learning experience that wine making presents, it keeps me constantly in a state of wonder.

What is one thing about this wine that you want to share with MWD customers?

You should think of this Sauvignon Blanc as a rich white wine to accompany a luscious meal.

If you could describe your wine in one sentence, what would it be?

Imagine the balance and complexity of a symphony composed to the simplicity of a solo performer – my wine is the balance and complexity of that symphony.  It is not dominated by a single note but has the richness that comes from many components in harmony with each other.

Petroni Vineyards

MyWineDeal is offering you two wonderful wines from Petroni Vineyards this week! The Brunello di Sonoma and Rosso di Sonoma are two spectacular red wines that you must try.  Below winemaker, Martin Mackenzie, answers a few questions about Petroni Vineyards and wines.

Where are you located? Do you have a tasting room?
Petroni Vineyards is located in Sonoma Valley, 1000 ft elevation off the valley floor at 990 Cavedale Rd. We have a Tasting Room that is open by appointment only. It is well worth the trip as the views are impressive, the wines fantastic and the ambience relaxed, intimate and in a beautiful setting.

There is always something going on at the winery here no matter what time of year. We currently have a huge cave complex being constructed. Built into this project will be a facility to distill our award winning Sangiovese Grappa on the Estate. We also recently purchased a state of the art Olive mill and Oil press for our Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Do you come from a winemaking family? If not, what drew you to winemaking?
I do not come from a Winemaking family. Initially I was a carpenter but soon decided to pursue winemaking in order to keep my alcohol budget down while working in a career that I love being involved with.

How long have you been making wine?
This harvest will be my 16th. I spent ten years in New Zealand at a very well known world class Cabernet producer called Stonyridge Vineyard. This will be my fourth vintage here in California for Petroni Vineyards. I have done a couple double vintages, that is to say a Northern and Southern hemisphere vintage in one year.

How would describe your winemaking style?
My winemaking style is fairly traditional but with a huge focus on attention to detail in the winemaking process. I am very hands on and alter the exact techniques used according to what I see I front of me. No formula winemaking here!

Where do you source your grapes?
All our wines, with the exception of a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, are made from estate owned and managed vineyards, one at the winery site and the other on the Napa/Sonoma county line on Trinity Rd. Both are about 15 acres in vines, are located on the Sonoma side of the Mayacamas ranges and both are also certified organic.

We have a very special Sangiovese that is a focus of our production. The owner here, Lorenzo Petroni, was born in Lucca, Italy and has dedicated some of the best parcels of his property to producing a world class Sangiovese in the style of Brunello di Montelcino. The 2005 that we are currently offering is from a great vintage for that variety and perfectly represents what we hope to achieve with this wine.

What varietals are you currently growing and making?
We also produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, a house Red Blend called Rosso di Sonoma that is based around Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and the Pinot.

Has your wine won any awards ?
Our Chardonnay is our most prolific award winner, Double Gold in the SF Chronicle Tasting, Gold in several other shows along with a number of 90+ points from various publications. It a real crowd pleaser, bright and focused ripe fruit, integrated and complimentary oak but also minerality and focus. No ML in this Chardonnay.

What has inspired you most?
I am always inspired by the properties I have had the privilege of making wines from. Also from the people I work with, particularly in the vineyard where we work hard to tweak our viticultural programs to optimize each different variety in each different location. It is fascinating seeing how to improve wines over a series of years as the style and techniques evolve. That is something you can’t be taught, it is an affinity for your trade you must have inside you.

Petroni Tasting Room

What is one thing about this wine you want to share with MWD customers?
The 2005 Sangiovese has power and intensity, the fruit is focused and a very direct representation of the unique and incredible property we have here. There are some lovely complexities that keep you interested and posses the hallmark of truly great wines, a very long, lingering and intense finish. I love it with Osso Bucco, or any Pasta, Pizza and meat dishes that include Tomato based sauces.

The Rosso is one of the best value wines on the market from either Napa or Sonoma. It is based around the Sangiovese and the 2007 vintage we currently offer is also packed with dark cherry and berry characters from our Syrah. It is the quintessential grilling wine, it goes well with red meat and while affordable enough to share around it still expresses very accurately the vineyard and fruit. It is made with all the care and attention of our top wines and is all estate grown and bottled.

Wines for Your July 4th Celebration

Celebrating the Fourth of July includes grilling over an open flame and enjoying the great American outdoors.  So what wines will go with grilled meats and a hot summer day?  Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc.

Zinfandel is the American grape varietal.  It has a history in the United States dating back to the 1800′s. In fact, for decades it was the most widely planted grape in California.  Also, red Zinfandel goes great with a variety of grilled meats.  The bold, fruit-forward wine picks up on the smokey flavors while the hints of black pepper will cut through the meats texture and fat.  So think Zin for your grilled red meats or anything slathered in BBQ sauce.

Sauvignon Blanc is a white grape varietal that is crisp and clean with a backbone of citrus fruit.  It certainly goes down easy on a hot summer day.  Whether you are planning to throw some shrimp on the barbie, grill up some vegetables, or just toss together a salad – Sauvignon Blanc’s high acidity makes it a perfect pair for each dish.

These wines are not only good wines for your July 4th celebration, but good grilling wines for the rest of summer.  Check out MyWineDeal for deals on both varietals.   Cheers to the Red, White, and Brew! Oops…Blue ;)
