The 2012 London Olympics have finally commenced. With viewership setting records, I feel that it is safe to say most of us are glued to our couches watching these 10,000+ Olympians compete for gold.  Whether you are sipping your way through the Olympics or not, we thought it’d be fun to compare this years top Olympians to wine. And here is what we came up with:

Michaels Phelps, Swimming: Merlot (after Sideways). After taking 4th place in the 400IM, people are giving up on him like they did with Merlot after the iconic movie Sideways. It’s not that he isn’t awesome, he just has to prove himself again.

Usain Bolt, Track & Field: A Bordeaux. Just like Bordeaux, he has the reputation of being the best in the world.

Gabriel Douglas, Gymnastics: An Albariño wine from Rias Baixas. Is she an up-and-coming star?

Ryan Giggs, Football: Port. Since port is considered the Englishman’s drink it seems only fitting for this ageless wonder who dons the Manchester United jersey.

Maria Sharapova, Tennis: Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. After completing a Grand Slam this year all she has left to do is earn a Gold Medal. She is an all-star.
