March 21st is Fragrance Day. A day dedicated to celebrating perfume, potpourri, flowers, and basically anything that smells good. In which case, today we celebrate the beautiful bouquet of wines.
When you are imagining that next glass of wine one usually thinks about sipping it back, but please don’t forget to stick your nose in the glass before hand. A wine’s real charm comes from its scent. Of our five senses, our sense of smell is the most intense and approximently 1,000 times more sensitive than our sense of taste. In fact, 80% of wine tasting comes from our olfactory sense.
Swirl the glass so it aerates the wine, releases the bouquet, and coats the inside of the glass. Do you smell raspberries, rose petals or smoke? Soaking up these aromas will only enhance the taste of the wine. Tonight when you pour yourself that glass, remember to swirl, sniff and sip. I might be a bit bias, but wine has one of the best fragrances to celebrate.
